Some people consider container gardening as an art, if this is the case then it’s not enough to gather a random selection of pots with a motley crew of conifers, perennials and leggy geraniums, lump them together in a corner of a patio and think it is a happy spontaneous and effective composition. It’s likely that we may have created quite simply a horrible mess.

Perhaps the largest of all the permanent plants that you might try growing in a container are trees. The idea may be rather more ambitious than you had contemplated, but if you have a yard with no plant beds or a basement garden – even a large, open patio – height is important. It can be achieved with climbers around walls and on fences but in a pen position a small, graceful tree makes a superb centrepiece.

All small trees or large shrubs grown in containers will thrive for several years if the pot is sufficiently large and are kept well fed and watered.

The best small trees for containers in our view are those with a weeping shape. Their structure means that there is little bare trunk between container and branches; rather, they fall back down towards the container, making a pleasing composition.

If yours is a tiny urban garden with wall-to-wall concrete or paving, then the chances are that you will appreciate container plants that flower early in the year, a little reminder is that spring occurs in town as well as in the country!
